The Spirit of Massachusetts is well known and rich with recent history.

She was the last ship built in the Charleston Naval Shipyard in 1983-1984 and was celebrated at a tall ship ceremony and festival in Boston Harbor before she was eventually homeported in Boothbay Harbour for years and used as part of the Ocean Classroom Foundation, operating as an at-sea, hands-on teaching vessel.

“She has sailed over 500,000 miles - she has been all over the place, to Canada, the Caribbean, Trinidad and Africa...and has had quite a life so far.

The Raymond family of Arundel purchased the 125-foot schooner and have worked in restoring her for her new life as a floating restaurant, which is planned to be docked in Lower Village near the Raymond’s other businesses - the Pilot House restaurant, Performance Marine, and the First Chance Whale Watch and Scenic Lobster Cruises.“She has sailed over 500,000 miles - she has been all over the place, to Canada, the Caribbean, Trinidad and Africa...she’s had quite a life so far,” Dwight Raymond said.

Mari Ann Raymond said the ship will also serve as an un-official floating museum, incorporating memorabilia from the ship’s builders, former sailors and fans. Some of the items include advertising and booklets from the original launching and tall ship celebration, photos of the boat at sea and during construction, pictures of the builders at work, blueprints and more.

Portland artist Jeff Herguth even made an eagle with a 7-foot wing span for the stern, and Arundel Sign Co. made the lettering for the bow.

* LWL (length of a vessel at the waterline): 80′
